I’m one of those nerds who doesn’t really care for Star Wars. Sorry. Regardless, this rap about Boba Fett gets my mental synapses dancing every time. MC Chris is one of nerdcore hiphop’s foremost rappers. He has a voice that sounds like a ten year old leemur and looks entirely different, but sure knows how to flow. Especially about pod races and intergalactic bounty hunting.

Tuesday Nerd Song – Lemon Demon – Knife Fight

Neil Cicierega is a silly comedian/musician who is not only a super geeky looking fellow, but makes very nerdy music under the name Lemon Demon. This song is weird on a huge level – intensely catchy, humorous, and with a surprise ending!

Monday Nerd Song – Nursehella – Nursehellamentary

Nursehella is one of the minority female representatives of the nerdcore hiphop scene. This is one of her more rad tunes. It works for me as it mentions Harry Potter, Bubble Bobble, dry humping, Evil Dead and Bill Nye. What could go wrong with that combo?

Friday Nerd Song – Schaffer the Darklord – Nerd Lust

What better way is there to celebrate Friday (aside from Rebecca Black) than listening to a great nerdcore hiphop tune that celebrates the hotness of nerd women? There is none.

Schaffer the Darklord (STD) is another personal favorite of mine within the nerdcore hip-hop community and this track is one of my top jams. Do enjoy. And shake your inhaler, baby.

This funny folklorist is known not only for this wonderful song “Code Monkey,” but for a quality tune about Ikea, and most notably for composing everyone’s favorite song sung by an evil A.I., “Still Alive,” the closing song from Portal. There’s nothing quite like a fine musical rendition of nerd culture. With so many humorous, skilled and geeky musicians out there, I’ve decided the world needs presented with a daily dose of musical nerdity for a week or so. To launch, here is one of my favorites – and hands-down the world’s foremost rap about Hamlet.

“Hey There Ophelia” by MC Lars.

MC Lars is coming with MC Chris and a few other awesome fools to Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh in early September. That would be a cool show to attend, if I had any other real-life friends who appreciated nerdcore, and if I didn’t have a distinct fear of small places filled with strange people of questionable cleanliness.

Rebecca Black’s New Single – “My Moment”

Rebecca Black destroyed the lives of millions with “Friday.” I mean, I play it every Friday morning at work for all to hear, but that’s just because I’m a jerk. I quite enjoy everything about the song and its video because of its immeasurable horrendousness. It’s so bad that I can’t get enough.

And hey, I don’t have a music video. +1 for RB.

A month-ish ago, she starred in Katy Perry’s “TGIF” video, which was actually sort of humorous despite being another terrible song about Friday. Yesterday, Black released her second single, “My Moment.” It is essentially a follow-up to the hatred and flurry of negative feedback she’s received over the past four months. Brandon “Blue” Hamilton and Quinton Tolbert, who have produced for Bieber and Hilary Duff (oh boy!), are behind her new song. I suppose that beats some creepy pedophile in a van who stalks school buses, but that’s debatable.

The song is about her sticking to her dreams, doing what she wants, and making her way into the spotlight. It shows she is working hard, learning what it means to be a performer, and wearing nice dresses. Or whatever. I guess it’s a good message of confidence, if that’s the goal. Especially for a young girl who has been through lots of assault. At least she’s doing what she does, even if it isn’t great.

It’s certainly not a great song – I listened to it about an hour ago and don’t have the slightest memory of what it sounded like – but it’s not bad in the same way “Friday” was bad. Just bad in a generic, forgettable, bubblegum terrible pop way like many songs on the radio. Honestly, if Demi Lovato recorded this song instead and nobody ever heard of Rebecca Black, or if this were Rebecca’s first song without the taint of Friday, it’d be a hit. Instead, it probably won’t be too successful because of who performed it. We shall see.

If nothing else, the video features So You Think You Can Dance alums Kent Boyd, Robert Roldan (returning to the show this season as an all-star), Adechike Torbert, Ashley Galvan and Channing Cooke, and was choreographed by Lauren Gottlieb… who is absolutely rad.

SomaFM – A Different Kind of Radio

I’ve always found myself to be a person of many musical tastes. It’s not uncommon to hear me listen to Marilyn Manson followed by Patsy Cline followed by Jay Z followed by Joss Stone. One of my biggest peeves is modern commercial radio, which plays mostly garbage and perforates it with endless advertisements for nonsense.

Like millions, I’ve turned to listening to internet radio almost exclusively. In the car, it’s all NPR and local public stations, but everywhere else, SomaFM is the place for me. I first discovered it a few months ago when one of their stations was playing at a Second Life art installation I attended. I’m not going to type a huge load about Soma, but I felt like giving the site a shout as it’s something I’ve truly grown to enjoy. Streaming out of a warehouse in San Francisco, SomaFM is a listener-supported collection of 22 varied, eclectic radio stations. The music they play is truly unique and original. Describing their goals, their website states “We have always believed that there are plenty of people out there who would really get into the music we play once they discovered us.”

My favorite is Lush. Ultimate chill-out music, great for keeping level if you work in an office cubicle farm and have two laser printers on either side of your cube running constantly 9 hours per day like I do. Check it out.
